Inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Bala Mandir was started in 1949 by late Sri K Kamaraj and Smt. S Manjubhashini. Today, it is a premier Social Welfare Organization, which has, over the years sheltered children in difficult circumstances and those from socio-economically deprived backgrounds.
Bala Mandir has gone beyond child care and rehabilitation, and today runs Educational Institutions that cater to children across different age groups – Pre-Primary, Primary and High School. The units, located on its campus in the heart of urban Chennai, include a Vocational Training Centre and a Home for girls in Nagercoil. Bala Mandir is a registered society under the Tamilnadu Society Registration Act, 1975.
Without distinction of caste, creed, religion or gender, thousands of orphans and destitute children have passed through the portals of Bala Mandir to become responsible and happy adults.
Bala Mandir is an independently run organization. Besides the 150 plus paid staff, there is a group of dedicated Trustees, Members and Volunteers who take on specific responsibilities for its functioning.
As a part of service to children with special needs, Bala Mandir Kamaraj Trust has integrated Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children (MNC) as a unit under its fold effective 1st April 2018.
