Introduction<\/h3>\n
At the Madhuram Narayanan Centre (MNC), we recognize that children with Intellectual Disability (ID) often have additional disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Down Syndrome and Epilepsy. These compounding disabilities can significantly impact their feeding abilities, including sucking, biting, chewing and swallowing of food, leading to reduced food intake and insufficient nutrient absorption, which ultimately affects their overall growth and development.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Addressing Nutritional Deficits<\/h3>\n
About 70% of families with children attending our center experience nutritional deficits. These deficiencies may arise from the complexities of the disabilities, a lack of awareness about positive nutrition practices among caregivers, or limited resources to meet nutritional needs. The Annapoorna Project was initiated in June 2004 to cater to this large sub-set of children, aiming to address these critical issues. Undernourishment is particularly detrimental during the first two years of life, as its effects on brain development and physical health can be irreversible. Recognizing the urgent need for nutritional and health interventions for these children and their families led to the establishment of Annapoorna.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Comprehensive Nutritional Assessment<\/h3>\n
At the start of each academic year, all MNC children undergo a thorough assessment by a dedicated interdisciplinary team of experts, including pediatricians, nutritionists, special educators and physiotherapists. This is coupled with clinical investigations which include blood tests to assess haemoglobin levels as well as growth monitoring through recording of height and weight to track physical development. The clinical investigations are conducted at the start and end of each academic year in order to compare baseline and endline results and track progress.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Tailored Nutritional Plans<\/h3>\n
From our baseline assessments, we identify 30 children each year under this project who have pronounced nutritional deficiencies, based on the specific feeding challenges and other clinical conditions. These children receive tailored nutritional interventions that address their specific challenges, including a balanced diet plan in consultation with the parents. Feeding skills are followed-up on by therapists. Selected children are also referred to a doctor for further medical intervention if required.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Daily Nutritional Support<\/h3>\n
All children at the Centre are provided daily nutritional supplements, including:<\/div>\n

Nutrifest<\/h3>\n
To further engage families, we host \u2018Nutrifest\u2019, an annual cookery competition for MNC mothers held every March. This event provides an opportunity for mothers to learn more about a healthy and balanced diet for their children.<\/div>\n
