Mainstreaming (Sanmargam)

Introduction

The ultimate goal for parents of children with special needs is to successfully integrate their children into mainstream society. Sanmargam, which means “good direction,” is dedicated to preparing these children for this transition by building on the foundational gains achieved during the early intervention program for children aged 0 to 6 years. This initiative focuses on equipping children with the necessary skills and support to thrive in both mainstream and special education settings.
Since its systematic implementation in 2004, Sanmargam has successfully mainstreamed over 130 children, recognizing that approximately 10% of participants in the early intervention program reach a level of functioning that qualifies them for admission to mainstream schools. To facilitate this preparation, a Montessori unit was also established as a platform for developing essential adaptive behavioral skills.

Methodology

The program employs a structured approach to ensure effective mainstreaming:
  • Early Identification & IEPs – Children undergo early assessments to determine their eligibility for mainstream education. They receive age-appropriate training in essential functional and adaptive skills necessary for successful integration. The focus of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is on moving ahead, emphasizing the development of skills in daily living activities. This approach bridges developmental gaps and helps children achieve their goals.
  • Parent Sensitization – Parents are educated about the mainstreaming process and assisted in selecting suitable schools based on accessibility and comfort.
  • School Admissions – Parents, along with their child and MNC teachers, meet with school principals and teachers to facilitate admissions.
  • Ongoing Support – Regular communication with class teachers and parents ensures that children’s progress is monitored and any behavioral management needs are addressed.
  • Teacher Workshops – Mainstream teachers are invited to workshops at the Madhuram Narayanan Centre to learn about current trends in disability care and management.

Transitioning to Mainstream Schools

Children who have completed the early intervention program at MNC are ready to transition either to another special education school or a regular mainstream school. As part of the preparation for transitioning to mainstream schools, Sanmargam identifies inclusive nursery and primary schools that:
  • Are welcoming to children with special needs
  • Respect the rights of all children to education, health, leisure, and a safe environment
Sanmargam also maintains continuous interaction with mainstream educators to orient them on disabilities, enabling them to adapt classroom environments accordingly. Mainstreaming under Sanmargam occurs annually in alignment with the school calendar, ensuring that children receive the support they need for successful integration into society.
