Introduction
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Delhi, has re-launched its RCI-accredited Certificate Programme in Early Childhood Special Education Enabling Inclusion (Intellectual Disability) as of July 2024. This one-year online course is open to candidates who have completed their 10+2 education.
Enhanced Curriculum
To ensure the course remains relevant and effective, IGNOU established an Expert Committee to review the syllabus and course materials. This review focused on assessing their suitability for modern educational contexts and identifying necessary revisions. The late Mrs. Jaya Krishnaswamy played a crucial role in this committee, contributing to discussions on syllabus updates and revisions of course manuals. The updated manuals feature case studies of children trained at MNC, offering valuable practical insights.
Regional Work Centres
In August 2024, following the Expert Committee’s recommendations and the Vice Chancellor’s approval, Regional Work Centres were designated for implementing the Certificate course, with MNC identified as the sole contact centre for Tamil Nadu. Students are required to complete specified hours in both theory and practical work, with MNC serving as the designated centre for practical training.
We are currently awaiting further instructions from IGNOU regarding the inauguration and implementation of this certificate program.
