Mr. K. S. Narayanan (30 January 1919 – 28 September 2012) was the esteemed Chairman Emeritus of The Sanmar Group, a title that reflects his distinguished service and profound impact on the organization. With over five decades of entrepreneurial management experience, he made significant contributions across various industries, including cement, plastics, sugar, pharmaceuticals, shipping, ceramic insulators, rubber, and calcium carbide.
He was instrumental as the Promoter and Managing Director of The India Cements Ltd., the largest cement manufacturer in South India, and played a pivotal role as Promoter Director in several other large-scale organizations, including Chemplast Sanmar Limited, Sanmar Shipping Limited, WS Industries Ltd., and Dadha Pharmaceuticals.
Throughout his career, Mr. Narayanan was actively involved with business and industry associations. He served as the Founder-President of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce – Southern Region (1969-70) and was the Past President of the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce (1975-76). His leadership extended to notable positions such as Sheriff of Madras (1974) and Honorary Consul of Denmark for South India (1975-88).
A philanthropist at heart, Mr. Narayanan was deeply committed to various educational and charitable organizations. His contributions included significant involvement with the Indian Education Trust, Madhuram Narayanan Charitable Foundation, Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children, Sanmar Welfare Trust, Uttara Swamimalai Trust, and several other trusts.In addition to his business acumen, Mr. Narayanan was a passionate supporter of sports. He served as the Patron of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association and held the position of former President of the Tirunelveli District Cricket Association.Mr. Narayanan passed away on September 28, 2012, at the age of 93.
