Recreation, sports and cultural activities constitute an important aspect of the training in the Early Intervention programme. Festivities, fun and frolic combined with structured training have become an integral part at MNC. MNC over the last 15 years has celebrated many Indian festivals annually. Be it Pongal, Krishna Jayanthi, Christmas, Ramzan, we have it all at MNC. The parents and teachers of MNC are actively involved in the planning of the celebrations in which they participate as much as the children.

Painting competitions, inter-school sports competitions are organized for the children. Field trips and picnics are also conducted for the children. Apart from this, MNC also organizes workshops for parents on various aspects of disability, seminars by noted specialists, refresher courses and training courses for teachers and core trainers.

15th Anniversary

“A Day in Our Lives”, a theatre workshop designed by Koothu-p-Pattarai Trust and performed by 120 parents, children and the teachers was the highlight of the 15th Anniversary of Mandhuram Narayanan Centre celebrated at Bala Mandir German Hall on 12 December 2004. The performers thrilled and entertained the spell bound audience by their vigorous dance sequences conveying messages to the parents and the public. Dr. George S. Baroff, former Professor of Psychology, University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, USA, an internationally renowned authority in Mental Retardation, was the Chief Guest. Dr. Baroff expressed his happiness to be present on the occasion and appreciated the pioneering work done by the institution. Sri K.S Narayanan, Chairman Emeritus, the Sanmar Group, presided over the function. He appreciated the performance put up to professional perfection by the teachers, parents and children and conveyed his felicitation to MNC on its laudable services in the 15 years culminating in the international conference and the National Award, and wished the Centre many more years of such service.

Sports Day

The 6th Annual Sports Day of the Centre was celebrated on February 11, 2005 at Bala Mandir premises with children of the Centre and from five other schools following training programme participating along with their parents. Cricketer Hemang Badani and sports Physician Dr. Kannan Pugazendi were guests of honour.

Activities 2004-05

In-house professional development courses for Staff: MNC conducted during the year regular in-house development courses for its staff such Warli Painting, the ones on Puppet making and Yoga Nidra. Experts from different disciplines concerning were also invited to speak to the parents and staff.

Project Sankarshana: A scheme to get back into the fold of early intervention children who have dropped out, with teams of staff visiting the families, ascertaining and analysing the reasons for their dropping out and finding alternative ways of providing early intervention to them.

Project Prepare: With a view to facilitating inclusion of children for the Centre, the Centre will specially prepare children who are likely to be ready for regular school.

A Holistic Development Project: Realising the importance of proper nutritional status of a child in its development, the Centre look up "Project Annapoorna" in which children with nutritional disorders are identified and given necessary intervention and support. The Centre will pursue the project, already in action, with the new children as well as with the older ones, arranging for laboratory tests to identify their nutritional status and providing necessary intervention and support.
