George S. Baroff
George S. Baroff, is a clinical psychologist and retired Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to his retirement, he directed a program at the University called the Developmental Disabilities Training Institute. The Institute has a long history of providing training to persons working with children and adults with developmental disabilities. Primarily, training workers in the field of mental retardation, now called, "intellectual disability", the Institute had a leading role in the creation of services at the community - rather than at the institutional level. In support of these activities, Professor Baroff authored a textbook that is now in its third edition, "Mental Retardation: Nature, Cause, and Management". He has also written a shorter book which, in addition to mental retardation, describes the nature and adaptive problems associated with such other major developmental disabilities as autism, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. Published in 1991, its title is "Developmental Disabilities: Psychosocial Aspects".
Professor Baroff has also been much involved as a psychologist in the assistance of criminal defendants who are mentally handicapped and is the author of a chapter in a recently published book that addresses these problems from an international perspective. Published in 2004, its title is "Offenders with Developmental Disabilities".
Professor Baroff was our guest at the 2004 Conference and was much impressed with the quality of our educational program and with the warmth, graciousness, and generosity of the Indian people. We are delighted to have him back with us this year.
