The session was chaired by Maj. Gen. A. Balasubramaniam, A.V.S.M. (Retd.) formerly Director (Information Systems), DRDO and Officer on Special Duty, Department of Electronics, Government of India and Mr. D. A. Rajan, Chairman, The IEE, Chennai Branch, Chennai.
Dr. K. Ganapathy, Director - Telemedicine, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, spoke on the telemedicine system in use in the hospital and gave a live demonstration on the scope of tele-medicine in collaboration with Dr. Vilvanathan, Apollo Hospital (Telemedicine Centre), at a remote location in Aragonda, in Andhra Prakadesh and its extension to the diagnosis, prevention and intervention in the case of disability. He said Tele-medicine could become the medium in future for obtaining consultation from experts in various disciplines at low costs. Prof. P Jeyachandran, Dr. G Kumaresan, Dr. M. Pappakumari and Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy as tele-consultants at the conference-end interacted with Dr. Vilvanathan at the remote station regarding three children with mental retardation needing intervention and gave the necessary professional advice.
The e-management team of Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children, represented by Ms Anindita Mukherjee and Mr. R. Lakshmi Narasimhan, demonstrated the software, Upaneeta, developed for following up the training imparted through the Upanayan early intervention programme at the Centre. The software is a user-friendly model for effective management of the data in the early intervention programme. The software records the case history of the child, the baseline assessment and has provisions for generating periodic progress report of the child. The beneficiaries of the software are the special educator, doctors, therapists, parents, special schools and research organizations.
